"Rachel" shirt in Black by Milkstars
Dressing after having a baby is painful, and I'm not just using a figure of speech. It's emotionally painful, when you try to wear your favorite clothes just to find out that they don't fit your post-baby body. The things that do fit make nursing so difficult, pulling and twisting and cutting into your sides and shoulders, that they aren't even worth putting on. I have probably spent 90% of the last 5 months in a nursing tank and zip-up sweatshirt.
When Milkstars sent me their Rachel shirt to try (I'd like to claim they named it after me, but it turns out that Rachel is also the name of the designers best friend), I left the house for the first time in an outfit I felt confident in. A simple v-neck, long sleeved t-shirt can make a world of difference to a new mom.
The Milkstars line of nursing shirts is beautiful in its simplicity. Made of a rayon/spandex blend, the shirts are super soft with just enough stretch. The fabric washes really well and won't shrink (almost a miracle, no?) and doesn't even wrinkle. The nursing access is via a second layer, rather like a tank top, with large openings to access your nursing bra. This second layer means that when you lift your shirt to feed your baby your back and stomach are still covered. Did you catch that? That is truly a miracle.
I am very impressed with the design of this shirt. It doesn't try to be more than it is - it's a t-shirt. A comfortable wardrobe staple that until now was difficult for nursing mothers to pull off comfortably. Milkstars has started adding new styles with details like the flutter sleeves on the Joan. Available in 10 vibrant colors with names like Go Go Green and Great-with-Denim Blue, Milkstars nursing tops will be great for the day you want basic black, or the day you want to make a statement with a bright Magenta.
I don't generally talk about price when I review products - it is my job to give you honest opinions about the products, not decide for you if they are worth the purchase price. Money is relative, always. I can say that while these are more expensive then shirts I might normally buy, it's a good investment. Having a few really comfortable and functional pieces in your post-partum wardrobe, especially when you are nursing, can make a world of difference in how you feel. It's enough of a challenge in that first year, it's important to feel good while you tackle it!
