Fighting for your rights, both as an individual and as a collective, can sometimes become dangerous, that is why we have the word combat. Women have known for the longest time, they have had to fight off the attentions and desires of others. Over time, fighting for their rights and ending up in jail or worse, they have seen the risk we must take to be called equal. Now they are being asked if any want to further this role of fighting for equality, by going all the way into combat. The problem is this request is coming too late; women have been in combat for many years, just never noticed as such. The world is changing people say, but they forget it was once different and we keep making it worse.
Combat is expected to be dangerous, but in many times our lives have been as well. Recently reporting on rapes of Native Americans, it can be understood those who are not granted protections are not considered equal. This is the mind-set many women had been fighting for hundreds of years, surprisingly it still exist most of all in the offices of authority. Such thought have to accept the reality as it is, and with changes to the social structure that reality faces off to them. Fighting for their rights, even fighting back against attackers, has been to only way authority seems to listen to others pressing civil rights.
The women’s movement in the U.S. and across the world shows there is so much more needing to be done. Recently in India there has come outcries from the violence, yet the women are not allowed to offer resistance. Then they are still not seen as equal, for as equal they would be able to defend themselves and even gain community support. Their then are still only on the verge of existence, and as seen in some countries, have been reversed to nothing. But the desire to be equal, to mean something more than just “a husband’s property,” has not ended nor are they willing to take a step back.
The worse conditions have been imposed, even death threats offered to those young and brave enough to resist, as was seen to Malala Yousafzai last year. Women still fight back, offering to go the distance and risk for the dream. We could call it a promise, only this promise has not been accepted by the authority which offers little but political ideology and no protections. Thus the fight moves into reality, as combat troops are needed across the world, but without clear battle lines any longer. Instead of lines we have entire regions filled with combat, and with this the advancement of women has been needed in these matters, training for such goes with the territory.
Furthering themselves, women have offered as needed to assist in inspections and confiscations at checkpoints. Only some tasks have dangerous roles, but in each, women have offered the same as the men standing with them. Now the U.S. is making available direct combat roles, resulting from the pressures of modern combat and no clear battle lines to direct combat. Therefore all military personal must expect to be in combat at one point, women in uniform having realized this long ago, only politics refused to hear. This means the request to for women in combat duties now, only shows the lack of understand the political authorities have had years.
Thus the request has not been on time, as the events of war have moved already beyond the limits authority placed as standard. A strong indication those filling political positions have not attending to the military needs or the changes of warfare. As other nations have had to react to changes in war, we too to find the need for advancing the roles women are offered. The worse thing to these women who are willing to step-up, they understand and take responsibility for conditions they feel must be done. Yet little regard has been granted to the same except the idea of women being weaker or any less equal. This, when put to the reality test, does not stand up to the facts.
Once we all lived the same, it did not matter who we were or our gender, the dangers of the world affect all equally. We have not left so far that there is no dangers anymore, they still exist, and women have had to deal with such in silence for too long. It is past time they were allowed to show they can step-up, when things are that bad they will make a stand for their beliefs. Those who have offered so much before did not always have the chance to fight back, now some will be fight for all and the belief in the promise of equality. As authority offers more wars with less reasoning, we can see if this promise is accepted or forgetten by the political expedient.
