Military tuition assistance restored

Yesterday, the senate voted to safeguard tuition assistance programs for active U.S. military members. Huge reductions in the assistance packages were made because of budget cuts that were activated March 1, 2013. The Coast Guard, Air Force, Army, and Marine Corps have pulled funding from the programs; they could not afford them. The amendment passage means that the Defense Department must restore funding, but how the money will be found in such a tight budget has not been reported (Nelson, 2013).

Tuition assistance has been a big draw to the military life. Many armed services members take advantage of the benefit to secure a successful future for them and their families. The cuts came as a blow to many who use the funds and those who intended to use them (Woodall, 2013). The latest amendment is good news for service members. However, before it can become law, the measure, part of a budget bill, must be voted on by the House of Representatives by March 27, 2013 (Nelson, 2013).
