Military Spouses Residency Relief Act: What's next?

The Military Spouses Residency Relief Act: Surge on the Senate was a resounding success, exceeding expectations and securing the co-sponsorships of 36 senators for S.B. 475.  A bill that, if passed, will dramatically alter the multiple military moves of spouses around the world by allowing them the right to keep a home state, instead of being required to change their residency (and all that doing so entails) with each and every move they must make.

Take a deep breath, fellow spouses.  Savor the fruits of your labor.

And now, pick up your phone.  Get back to work.

On Thursday, May 21 there will be a mark-up* for S.B. 475.  During this session, there will be discussion about removing the section of S.B. 475 relating to income and property tax.  The MSRRA Coalition is asking that all supporters of the Military Spouses Residency Relief Act--military spouses, friends, family--attend the mark-up and ask that the bill be fully considered as it is currently written.

The May 21 Session will be held at 9:30am at the Russell Senate Building 418.

From now until Thursday, according to the MSRRA Coalition, it is important to make calls to the VA Committee members, asking them to approve the bill as it is written.

*Mark-ups are sessions in which the committee meets to "mark up" the legislation pending in the committee bills that have been introduced and then "referred" to the committee of jurisdiction.  In most cases, legislation must pass the relevant committee prior to being considered for a vote on the floor.  Once a bill has been discharged from committee, or voted out of committee, it goes before the full house for consideration.

Thanks Karen for the update. But I am very angry with you now. I will be singing "I'm just a Bill" in my head all day b/c of that photo. LOL :)
