The Military Officers Association of America's (MOAA) has chosen Safeway to receive its 2014 Distinguished Service Award.
The annual award honors organizations as well as individuals for “their strong support of national defense and the uniformed service community.”
Safeway, Inc. was one of the first companies to extend full company benefits to employees in the National Guard and Reservists who are called into active duty. They were also among the first, and continue today, to make up the pay differential when their employees are called to serve.
The nation’s second largest grocery store chain actively pursues employment opportunities for returning veterans.
Additionally, Safeway has collected and donated nearly $3 million to the Wounded Warrior Project and other organizations that help veterans return to the workforce and recover from service-related injuries.
Safeway has hired nearly 3,600 veterans or members of the Guard and Reserve since 2012 and has committed to hiring at least another 1,500 veterans or members of the Guard and Reserve in 2014.
