According to AP's Nancy Benac, military food is set to get a lot healthier. The military will be adding more fruits, veggies and low-fat dishes to the menu. Maryland is a military heavy state, with such bases close to Baltimore as Aberdeen Proving Grounds, the United States Naval Academy, Fort Dietrich, Andrews Air Force Base, etc.
Chow time! When I was in the Air Force, that's what we called our mealtimes. I got 15 minutes to eat, and I had to sit "at attention". That means, feet planted squarely on the floor, together, back straight, head in an up-and-down motion. You couldn't look around, but of course, some people <ahem> took little peeks.
You were not allowed to talk during meals at my point in the Officer Training School. We were also not allowed to drink any caffeine, which was killer when waking up at 5 am. In fact, we were only allowed to drink water. "They" also wanted the men to lose weight and the women to bulk up. I was told to eat steak and potatoes at all three meals, including my 6 o'clock-ish breakfast. I do love steak . . . so in those days, I obliged. Well, you oblige at Officer Training School whether you like it or not.
We've all learned a lot about nutrition and health since then. Lighter figures are considered healthier and it's not a great idea to have steak and potatoes for all of one's meals, every day.
