An Internet hoax about Miley Cyrus committing suicide has gone viral on Facebook and moved on over to Twitter. The Facebook post appeared early in the day on Friday, Aug. 30, and indicated that stress over the MTV Video Awards performance had caused her to commit suicide by hanging. This was being posted on Facebook, but as the Facebook page link was being disabled, it was quickly spreading on Twitter.

Twitter is accustomed to death hoaxes such as this, so they immediately questioned the veracity of the rumor. It still was met with exclamations of shock. Many of the posts almost had a "Aren't you ashamed?" tone.

Miley Cyrus has been in a whirlwind of attention, mainly bad, since the award show last Sunday night. She performed a very sexually provocative dance number clad in only flesh-toned lycra undies. She has been excoriated from all sides over the very disturbing number.

The media savvy viewers could see the intent of her shocking behavior: she was trying to "kill" the Hannah Montana image once and for all. In her television show on Disney Channel, Miley Cyrus played a regular girl who was secretly a teen superstar, Hannah Montana. As Miley came into her own career, she has tried to distance herself from the sugary sweet pop image.

The stories about Hannah Montana being dead may have prompted this Miley Cyrus suicide rumor.
