Miley Cyrus shed her sweet Hannah Montana image when she recorded the music video Can't Be Tamed. She was ready to let go of that clean cut teeny bopper persona. Each step away from that sweet girl next door role seems to make the news, whether it's cutting her hair, or getting a new tattoo. The story of her 17 tattoos are symbolic of her journey from child to woman with the latest tattoo a set of crossed arrows inked by Kat Von D. The arrows are a Native American symbol that represents friendship.
Dreamcatcher tattoo
The dreamcatcher tattoo on her right side also comes from Native American culture. Dreamcatchers are hung above a person's bed where they are said to catch bad dreams while they let good dreams through. Miley's family is part Cherokee, and she's not the only one in her family with a dreamcatcher tat. Her brother Trace has one inked on his neck. The dreamcatcher on her side is a picture of the dreamcatcher that hangs over her bed with four feathers that represent her four siblings.
Just breathe tattoo
It surprised many of her fans in 2009 when at 17 years of age her parents gave Miley permission for her "Just Breathe" tattoo which is inked high on her left ribcage as a tribute to a good friend who died from cystic fibrosis in 2007 and her grandfathers who passed way from lung cancer (Harper's Bazaar).
Love tattoo
Her second tattoo "Love" is found on the inside of her right ear. According to Miley, this one signifies the fact that love can drown out negative messages (Access Hollywood).
Finger tattoos
Miley's fingers tell an interesting story, too. She has 7 small tattoos on her fingers with five of them on her right hand. The small heart on her pinkie is something of a family tradition. Her father was the first to get a heart tat after Miley traced it between his thumb and index finger while sitting in church. Since then, all of Miley's family members have a heart tattoo on their hands. Her other finger tattoos include: a peace symbol, a cross, equal sign, the word "karma," and the word "bad."
Anchor and other tattoos
In 2011, Miley had an anchor tattooed on her right wrist while in Brazil. She also has an ohm on her left wrist and a tiny sugar skull on her ankle. Other tattoos include Roman numerals on the inside of her right elbow, "Love Never Dies" on her arm, and a Theodore Roosevelt Quote on her left forearm was tattooed on the star earlier this year and reads, "So that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat."
