There was little surprise exhibited by anyone when Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth announced their split earlier this month, but it seems that they were "done" long, long ago. In the October issue of Fashion, the now-single pop star said (via E Online on Thursday) that that a new song, "Drive," is about the the problems the couple faced earlier this year -- and that was penned back in February.
Cyrus said:
I wrote it while I was working on Valentine's Day—emotionally it was such a hard time. It is about needing to leave someone but not really wanting to completely cut yourself off from the relationship. It's a time when you want to leave but you can't. It's also about moving on.
"Drive" is one of the songs from Cyrus' upcoming new album, "Bangerz," which can be pre-ordered here. The album hits retail on Oct. 8.
She also addressed her critics and rivals, saying:
I feel like I'm in a different lane now. When it comes to critics, I have my blinders on and I don't really feel like I have to compete with other pop artists."
I never think, ‘Oh, this performance is going to make her look bad or out-shadow her' either, but if there is no competition, there would be no reason for any of us to show up to work. At an office, everyone is trying to be boss. Pop music is the same. What I wear adds a factor that other girls can't compete with.
Cyrus and Hemsworth met on the set of "The Last Song," which they co-starred in, back in 2009. They became engaged in June of last year. Hemsworth gave Cyrus a 3 1/2-carat diamond engagement ring, which reportedly he has said she can keep.
Recently, Cyrus released a racy new video for another song, "Wrecking Ball," another song which will appear on her "Bangerz" album. The video was released shortly before she and Hemsworth announced their break-up.
