Mild air and heavy snow top the list of Michigan weather events on this day in history. From the National Weather Service archives here are the events that happened on February 22.

1936 - Marquette recorded a high temperature above freezing for the first time in well over a month.

1988 - Strong northwesterly winds ushered arctic air into the central U.S., with temperatures in Missouri 30 degrees colder than the previous day. The strong winds produced squalls along the shore of Lake Superior, with up to 15 inches of snow reported over the Keweenaw Peninsula of Upper Michigan. (The National Weather Summary) (Storm Data)

1990 - A fast moving storm produced near blizzard conditions in Michigan. Snowfall totals ranged up to 9.5 inches, wind gusts reached 74 mph at Ann Arbor and 5 foot snow drifts were reported around Saginaw. The Michigan AAA records showed more than 5,000 traffic accidents reported, a near record for one day. There were several chain reaction collisions including one near Pontiac that involved 100 cars. 2000 - Warm air surges into Lower Michigan with temperatures reaching the 60s. Grand Rapids sets a record high of 63°, Muskegon hits 60° and Marquette reach a chilly record of 49°.

2003 - Port Huron received a foot of snow from a snowstorm that lasted from the 22nd - 23rd.

2009 - A low pressure trough over Lake Superior aided in the generation of heavy lake effect snow from late on the 21st into the morning of the 23rd. The heaviest snow occurred at Eben Junction in Alger where storm snow totals measured more than 30 inches. Ironwood in Gogebic County received 10-11 inches from the event. A spotter in northeast Delta County along the Alger County line measured 8.6 inches of snow in 24 hours.
