Collaborators, a new play directed by Nicholas Hytner and written by John Hodge, will be played live on Dec. 15, 2011, by the National Theater Live, in collaboration with the Amphibian Stage Productions, and The Museum of Modern Art in Forth Worth.
The play is based on Mikhail Bulgakov, a Russian writer and playwright, whose works were often censored and banned during the deadly rule of the communist regime. Set in the days when the Soviet Regime’s gloom loomed over Moscow, the play depicts a true historical event that took place in one of Russia’s largest city during 1938, in which Mikhail Bulgakov was asked to write a play on Stalin for his sixtieth birthday.
The thrilling power struggle between the free spirited, bohemian artist, the secret police of the time, and their relationship with Stalin, highlights the inexorable cat and mouse games played between the politically minded forces of the time. By relating the most sensitive matter of the 20th century through a satirical mindset, John Hodge succeeds in inspiring his audience with a slight whiff of humour that he carefully instills in his play.
Known for his award winning screenwriting for Trainspotting and for Shallow Grave, John Hodge through his yet another ingenious piece, Collaborators, leaves another hint of his artistic genius which marks him as one of the most creative play/screen writers of the time.
