Power 98’s “Christmas in the Carolinas” with Mike Winans performing happens today, Thursday, Dec.8, at the Epicenter, Uptown Charlotte, 11am to 1pm. Radio station personalities No Limit Larry, 97.9 and Chirl Girl, 101.9, will broadcast live for Another Choice Adoption Agency toy donations. They’re asking everyone to bring a new toy to the Epicenter for less fortunate children.
“I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth and I feel for these children,” said Mike Winans, in spite of being a descendant of the legendary gospel artists, The Winans, Ce Ce and Be Be’s nephew and being born three days after his dad, Michael, Sr. won a Grammy in 1982.
“Yes, it presented me with the opportunity to walk through certain doors but that’s not enough. There are others in our family who are not in the music industry. But, we do have a good history, a great platform. It’s not only genetic but also environmental. I just use what I have,” said Mike.
What Mike has is a new solo CD titled My Own Genre that he introduced at an album release party, hosted by J. Hill, Celebrity Power magaine, held at Loft 1523 near CPCC, recently. Mike fused his diverse musical background, Hip Hop, R & B, Soul, Country and Gospel, to create his own category. Mike has written and produced for his aunt, Vickie, Sean P. Diddy’s company, Chris Brown and New Edition. During the 2010 holiday season, Mike released A Mike Winans Christmas, Timeless Noel.
“I didn’t want to fit the mold, growing up in gospel music. The phrase, ‘my own genre’ represents self-expression, uniqueness and individuality. It’s used as a way to inform others that you are comfortable stepping out of the box. Be who you want to be,” said Mike.
Mike officially began his music career in high school where with his cousins formed the group, Winans Phase 2 and nominated for a 1999 New Best Gospel Artists Grammy Award.
