On the sidewalk on the corner of 11th St. and Marshall St., between the hours of 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., there always seems to be a line of about ten customers. They wait patiently to get their food from Mike's, a little red food cart that has been making an appearance on Virginia Commonwealth University's MCV campus for over ten years.
The food at Mike's is both cheap and delicious. His menu ranges from Philly cheese steaks and taco salads to stews, pasta, and chicken sandwiches. Most sandwiches range from $4.25 to $5.25, with $1 being added for extra meat. Taco salads and regular salads cost $5.50. Mike's has specials during the week which normally stay in the price range of $5.25 to $5.50. Drinks cost 75 cents and can be combined with Utz chips (50 cents) or homemade chips ($1.25) for a combo. Mike's also sells homemade cookies and brownies for $1.
The cart is owned and run by Mike Powers, who has a true passion for food and customer service. He knows and keeps in touch with many of his usual customers and is able to remember their orders. Mike is also very flexible, allowing for customers to mix and match certain menu items to create their own personal lunch option. For example, a customer can ask for a Cajun Philly cheese steak. Normally, grilled chicken is used for the Philly, but if a customer makes that particular request, Mike will substitute Cajun chicken.
Currently, there are two other members who work for Mike's. The first person is Jared, who runs and operates Mike's second cart, located on the corner of 11th St. and Clay St. For days when the line at Mike's is too long, customers can walk over the the other cart and be served by Jared. The other worker on the food cart is me, and I can assure you that the food is great and the service is as quick as we can make it.
The carts are available to eat at from Monday until Friday each week.
