Saturday, March 23, 2013, Mike Rawlings, the Mayor of Dallas, is requesting the participation of 10,000 men to join him in the rally against domestic violence. Rawlings, women, children and the victims believes domestic violence needs to come to an abrupt end. The affect domestic violence has on everyone involved is unforgettable and may lead to a continuing cycle of abuse. With assistance from the men in the DFW metroplex, Rawlings is hoping to change this cycle and spread awareness on this universal epidemic.
Domestic violence has several titles such as domestic abuse, spousal abuse, battering, family violence, and intimate partner violence but they all have the same impact on an individual. The actions of the abuser can vary with physical or mental (threats) aggression.
3.3 million children witness domestic violence each year in the US. There has been an increase in acknowledgment that a child who is exposed to domestic abuse during their upbringing will suffer in their developmental and psychological welfare. Dodd, L. W. (2009). "Therapeutic groupwork with young children and mothers who have experienced domestic abuse". Educational Psychology in Practice 25: 21–36. Because of the awareness of domestic violence that some children have to face, it also generally impacts how the child develops emotionally, socially, behaviorally as well as cognitively. Lazenbatt, A.; Thompson-Cree, M. E. (2009). "Recognizing the co-occurrence of domestic and child abuse: A comparison of community- and hospital-based midwives".Health & Social Care in the Community 17 (4): 358.
Rawlings stated he is asking for three requests from the men locally.
• Participate in the rally.
• Make an effort to contact 20 other men and encourage them to participate in the rally as well.
• Pledge the following :
-I will never commit an act of violence against women.
-I will hold abusive men accountable for their heinous actions and help them seek counseling.
- I will speak out against domestic violence and promote domestic violence awareness.
- I will teach my daughters, nieces and granddaughters that they never have to accept violence in a relationship, and teach my sons, nephews and grandsons that violence is an unacceptable way to express anger or displeasure.
Various speakers including Emmit Smith, 2010 Pro football hall of fame inducee, Frank Antonacci, president of Central Texas Region for Verizon Wireless, and Dr. Frederick D.Haynes, the Senior Pastor of the Friendship-West Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas will be attending the event to boost in spreading the word to putting an end to domestic violence in Dallas.
