Mike Olt wins Texas Rangers top minor league player honor

The Texas Rangers awarded Mike Olt with the 2012 Tom Grieve Award as the Rangers' top Minor League player. According to MLB.com on Jan. 4, the Rangers will present Olt with the award next Friday.

Mike Olt is one of the Rangers' key prospects, a hitter whose power reminds some of Washington Nationals' phenom Bryce Harper. In 2012, Olt played for Double-A Frisco, where he hit .288 with 28 home runs and 82 RBIs. The Rangers called him up to the majors at the end of the season, where he hit .152 with five RBIs in 33 at-bats.

Olt looked like he might open the season in the lineup as a designated hitter possibility, but with Lance Berkman's signing, he might end up starting the season back in the minors.

Other Rangers getting awards at the ceremony include Cody Buckel as the minor league pitcher of the year (10-8, 2.49 ERA, 159 Ks), Engel Beltre as the defender of the year (12 assists, one error), and Ben Rowen as relief pitcher of the year (5-0, 1.57 ERA, 19 saves).

Also receiving awards is San Francisco Giants' outfielder Hunter Pence as the 2012 Texas Professional Player of the Year and John Burkett as the winner of the Mark Holtz Alumni Award.
