There’s one thing about being the best, everyone wants something from you. In the Broncos’ case it’s offensive coordinator Mike McCoy.
The headset wearing leader of the NFL’s second highest scoring offense is in high demand around the league for a overabundance of head coaching vacancies. He will interview for the Arizona Cardinals and Buffalo Bills job Saturday and the Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears positions Sunday, according to sources.
“I think anytime with team success, your guys get opportunities. That’s players, coaches, everybody,” said the Broncos head coach. John Fox helped lead the New York Giants to the Super Bowl, in 2000 as a defensive coordinator, prior to getting his first opportunity as a head coach. “He’s a heck-of-a coach. We’ve got a lot of very qualified coaches on this staff assistant-wise that will get opportunities.”
McCoy will likely have a big decision ahead of him, and he’s not shying away from it.
“Everyone has individual goals, as a coach and a player,” admitted McCoy. “Hopefully, one day I will become a head coach but we still have a lot of football ahead of us here and we’ll see what happens down the road.”
His offensive mind has adapted and applied different scenarios to be successful with two very different quarterbacks. A year ago, McCoy implemented a “wild-cat” offense where Tebow could utilize his strengths to help the team. This season, he has reverted to a more tradition offense and he’s fully aware how lucky he is to be coaching one of the best quarterbacks to ever live.
“It goes to show you the type of players we have here and the organization we have here,” McCoy said. Manning has only had one year, each a different season, with a better completion percentage (68.6%), more passing yards (4659) and more touchdowns (37) than this 2012 campaign. “As coaches, we’re all products of the players we have and the other guys we work with.”
The players have returned the favor, fully endorsing McCoy.
Manning has emphatically supported his new coordinator, the complimentary connoisseur of endless hours of film, his work ethic and leadership skills, endeavors. Coming from one of the most detail oriented, driven players the NFL has ever seen, this notion is like Manning giving McCoy his blessing.
“I think he’s ready. I think he’s paid his dues,” continued Manning. “In my opinion, he deserves a shot at one of these head coaching jobs.”
But McCoy understands the reality of things, the focus and urgency is still pinpointed on the playoffs, he must finish his job in Denver before he can even think about starting the next one.
