Love will take his place alongside these previous recipients: Elton John, Smokey Robinson, Natalie Cole, Herb Alpert & Lani Hall, Andy Williams, Gladys Knight, Johnny Mathis, Celine Dion, Barry Manilow, Julie Andrews, Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney, Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gorme, Peggy Lee, Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald (among others).
Mike’s lead vocals can be heard and appreciated on these notable Beach Boys hits: “Fun, Fun, Fun,” “I Get Around,” “409,” “Surfin’ Safari,” “Surfin’ USA,” “Shut Down,” “California Girls,” “Be True To Your School,” “Little Deuce Coupe,” “Getcha’ Back,” “Do It Again,” “Rock And Roll Music” and “Kokomo.”
The host for the evening’s event is a very familiar face; John Stamos. Stamos has been a stalwart supporter of the Beach Boys since his youth and was instrumental in arranging for the group’s numerous television appearances in the 1980’s and ’90s on “You Again” and “Full House.”
From his home in California, John had this to say about about hosting the 21st ELLA Awards, “When you hear Mike sing ‘If everybody had an ocean…’ you immediately know that that’s Mike Love, and that’s The Beach Boys. That’s what makes this honor so deserving. Because Mike has a truly original, iconic voice. He’s also one of the great front men of our generation and continues to be so for more than 120 dates a year. His voice still has that same youthful, teenage quality that makes you want to go surfing, or hop into a ‘Little Deuce Coupe.’ He’s a hero to me. I’m proud to see him be recognized in such a beautiful way, and take his place alongside other giants of song.”
The event will be filled with a long list of notable music legends honoring Mike, including; David Marks, Dean Torrence of Jan & Dean, America, Christopher Cross, Micky Dolenz of the Monkees and David Lee Roth.
Also on hand for this special occasion will be the next generation of Beach Boys’ children in the group California Saga; consisting of Mike’s son and daughter Christian and Ambha Love, Carnie & Wendy Wilson, Matt & Adam Jardine, Carl B. Wilson and Justyn Wilson. They will be performing two songs.
In anticipation of the event, California Saga’s music director Billy Hinsche (Dino, Desi & Billy) had this to say, “Mike Love has been an ambassador of song for over 50 years, and I am thrilled to be performing at this prestigious event acknowledging his ongoing contribution to the world of music.”
The Ella Award is presented by the Society of Singers, and produces an annual fundraiser and gala event — the Ella Awards — for whom singers are awarded for their contribution to the world of music along with their dedicated efforts to benefit the community and worldwide causes. Love, and many of the musical guests will be performing for the occasion.
