Comedian Mike Birbiglia surprised fans by releasing his comedy special “My Girlfriend's Boyfriend” to Netflix subscribers on Aug. 23, 2013. The special which is filmed in Seattle, the only city where an audience member would show up without shoes, features Birbiglia taking the audience through his experiences with love. He is painfully relatable as he describes making out, making up, and the dangers of saying “I love you” on the first date.
Throughout the show, Birbiglia shows his versatility by seamlessly intertwining physical comedy into his deeply personal bits, sending the crowd into fits of laughter. He hilariously describes the lessons he's learned through dating such as don't eat cotton candy and go on a carnival ride, dancing in a strobe light is scary, and it's not a good idea to hang out with your girlfriend's boyfriend.
“My Girlfriend's Boyfriend” ran for four months off-Broadway and won the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Solo Show. Birbiglia then toured the show across the world and is working on adapting it into a fictionalized, character driven film in the same vein as his 2012 debut “Sleepwalk with Me,” which is also available on Netflix.
So rather than navigating through the awkward world of dating this weekend, just stay in, order a pizza and enjoy a Birbiglia double feature.
