Mijhaar has been installed by betting tipsters as the favourite to win the John Smith’s Cup at York on Saturday. The Roger Varian-trained four-year-old notably grabbed third behind Gatewood in the Wolferton Stakes at Royal Ascot. York’s horse race event will be Mijhaar’s seventh career start.
Varian’s sprinter will have to contend with two of Luca Cumani’s prized runners to have a shot at the £150,000 event. The betting odds on second favourite Danadana are placed at 7-1 while Kirthill is at 8-1. Richard Fahey’s Area Fifty One, a Newmarket winner, comes in at 9-1. Other racehorses include Navajo Chief and Hajras each with 10-1 odds.
In other action this weekend, Brown Panther will be among 18 possible runners for the Prix Maurice de Nieuil and its mile and three-quarters stretch at Longchamp on Saturday. Brown Panther is part-owned by former Manchester United striker Michael Own and finished second at St Leger in 20122.
Punters looking to wager at the Longchamp races may consider that Brown Panther won by a considerable seven lengths lead at Pontefract earlier this year. Fame and Glory could rival his efforts on Saturday.
There will be a grandstand enclosure at Sandown Park on Thursday, July 12 as singer Jessie J will hold a concert. Additionally, Tom Jones will perform at the park on July 18 while Alfie Boe makes his performance on July 25.
