Miguel Cotto poised for success against 'Money May'

On May 5th, Miguel Cotto finally gets his chance to take on arguably Boxing's top fighter in Floyd Jr. Cotto has called out Floyd in the past but was overlooked by Floyd's camp. Cotto used to publicly declare that Floyd was ducking him especially when Miguel was at his peak. Cotto is very confident heading into this fight as he's resurrected his career since the November 2009 loss to Pacquiao. Boxing's top trainer Freddie Roach believes Cotto will have succes against Floyd. According to a Sunday February 5th report by BoxingScene.com, Roach made the following comments about Cotto's chances:

"When Cotto catches you on the ropes, that's where he does his best work. And Mayweather likes to lean against the ropes to counter. In that scenario, Cotto could succeed. As for styles, it is an interesting fight. It's a good technical boxer fighting with a counter-puncher. Mayweather is strong physically, but I think Cotto is a bit stronger."

Cotto has come on strong over the last two years as he moved up to the 154 pound weight class and sought training from Emanuel Steward. He's won 3 fights in a row defeating Foreman, Mayorga and getting revenge on Margarito for his first career loss in 2008.

The 31 year old Puerto Rican star is 37-2 with his two losses coming to Margarito and Pacquiao. The bout against Margarito has been under question since Antonio was caught cheating 6 months later in a fight against Mosley. In the Pacquiao fight, Cotto came down to 145 to meet Manny. Many pundits claim that he was too drained for the fight. It's also said that the reason Cotto didn't accept a rematch with Manny in 2012 was because they wanted him to come down to at least 147.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. causes chaos at Super Bowl weekend

Instead, Cotto will take on the soon to be 35 year old Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 5th live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Although Mayweather will be the heavy favorite, Cotto has a puncher's chance in the fight. Floyd will come up to Cotto's weight of 154 pounds and both fighters have agreed to random drug testing.
