Miguel Cotto is ready for Sergio Martinez or Canelo Alvarez

Fight News reported Tuesday that Miguel Cotto will scrap on June 7 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Cotto (38-4, 31 KOs) is hoping to cement a bout versus The Ring and WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez.

“Winning that title at 160lbs is the main feature for the fight,” said Cotto, 33, a four-time world titlist in three weight divisions who now trains with Freddie Roach.

The Puerto Rican legend, who brutalized Delvin Rodríguez over three rounds on October 5, remains willing to face Canelo Alvarez in the future.

“If my goal wasn’t to win the fourth title, I would have agreed to fight Canelo,” said Cotto, who landed 29 of his 55 blows to Rodriguez’s torso and dominated. “A fourth title is an attractive alternative for me.”

The 23-year-old Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KOs) plans to enter the squared circle three times in 2014.

Meanwhile, the 38-year-old Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KOs) has been shelved since physically deteriorating in April against formidable Englishman Martin Murray.

Martinez, who controversially outscored the 31-year-old Murray (25-1-1, 11 KOs) by three counts of 115-112, suffered another right knee injury, broken left hand, and bad cut over his left eye during the scrap.

Cotto’s a bit shopworn and Martinez is clearly graying and no longer the dominant force that won the 2010 “Fighter of the Year” award.

Regardless, even if the clash would have been more intriguing a few years ago, Miguel Cotto and Sergio Martinez is still an extremely “attractive alternative for” boxing fans in 2014.
