Since his Top Rank contract expired at the end of 2011, Miguel Cotto is a free agent but will likely continue to work with Top Rank on a fight-by-fight basis. The main difference is that Cotto now has more control over his own career – he doesn’t have to take on any fights he doesn’t want, which could prove beneficial if Top Rank's Arum tries to keep Cotto's options in-house. According to a January 2nd report by BoxingScene.com, Miguel Cotto comments on potential fights with Alvarez, Chavez Jr., and Mayweather Jr:
"I do not rule out any of those fights. We have always been open to big names, big challenges, and all of these fights are major challenges. We'll see what offers the new year brings, and we'll review them, analyze them and then make the best decision"
Big money fights he could consider this year include those with Canelo Alvarez, the soon-to-be incarcerated Floyd Mayweather Jr, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., and a long awaited rematch with Manny Pacquiao. Cotto will discuss things over with his team to see what the best option is. I'm not sure that Floyd would accept a fight with Cotto and a Pacquiao rematch might not happen until after Pacquiao fights Marquez for a 4th time, if Arum has his way with things.
Cotto, born in Puerto Rico on October 29, 1980, is a four-time world champion in three different weight divisions, but currently fights in the junior middleweight division. His record – 37-2, 30 KOs – and his free-agent status allow him to be more selective when it comes to potential opponents in 2012. There's still an outside chance that Cotto could accept Sergio Martinez's challenges now that he's free of Top Rank.
Who do you think Cotto should fight?
