When you see three X’s lined up together (XXX), your mind may think the symbol represents something dirty. However, if you knew they were roman numerals, then your know XXX together represent a great milestone. This year the Miami International Film Festival (MIFF) returns for its 30th (XXX) year. MIFF returns this Friday, March 1st and you can be sure there will be plenty of opportunities to celebrate.
MIFF is doing something they have never done before in their 30 years; a documentary film will both open and close the festival. “Twenty Feet from Stardom” will open the Miami International Film Festival at the Olympia Theater at the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts and will be followed by the Ultimate Opening Night Party in The Historic Alfred | Dupont Building. At the Gusman, Darlene Love, who stars in the movie, will be giving a very special performance.
What follows is ten full days of great movies from all across the world, parties, seminars and other special events (Click HERE to see the full MIFF XXX schedule). Some notable movies to look out for are “Calloused Hands” by Jesse Quiñones and “Eenie Meenie Miney Moe” by Jokes Yanes. Both are local filmmakers who shot their movies in Miami. The 3D animated movie, “The Croods” will be playing at the film festival and the directors of the movie, Kirk De Micco and Chris Sanders, will be there too. Speaking of great directors, Lasse Hallström, who recently directed the new movie, “Safe Haven” will be receiving the Career Achievement award from MIFF when his newest movie, “The Hypnotist” is shown. There will be plenty of other of celebrities to see on the red carpet and throughout the Miami International Film Festival. John Leguizamo, Carrie-Anne Moss, Eduardo Noriega, Oscar nominee Lena Olin, Oscar nominee James Cromwell, Griffin Dunne and Darlene Love, who will be featured in the opening night film, along with many others, will be at MIFF XXX too.
The Miami International Film Festival is well known for its association with Miami Dade College, so it is no surprise that many educational seminars will be available. What is the role of film festivals in a film and filmmakers career? Which film festival is right for you? The “You’re Invited? Now What?” Master Class seminar on Sunday, March 3rd can help answer these questions. Join Jesse Quiñones, and other filmmakers at MIFF to get an idea what you should know before you blindly submit your movies to any festival out there. If you are interested in making a movie in Florida then you would want to attend “Producing in Florida and Beyond”. How much power does a film critic have? Stop by the “Analyze This: A Critics Power in Today’s Film Culture” and see if you may find those answers. Click HERE to see the full schedule and how to attend one of these and other classes.
There is little doubt that the 30th Annual Miami International Film Festival can end up being their biggest year ever! They do not intend such a milestone to go by without celebrating properly. Given the parties, movie lineup and everything else they have planned this year, XXX will be a year that is not soon forgotten.
