First Semifinal: Ferris State Only Needs One to Surpass Colgate

Gerald Mayhew’s first period goal on the power play would seal the deal for the Ferris State Bulldogs as they advanced to the Midwest Regional final at Webster Bank Arena in Cincinnati with a narrow 1-0 win over the ECAC’s Colgate Raiders.

Colgate only had four total power play opportunities in the game which they couldn’t capitalize on, and Ferris State would go 1-5 on the power play in the win. Goaltender CJ Motte would play all sixty minutes for the Bulldogs while his counterpart for Colgate, Charlie Finn, would also play just short of all sixty minutes (fourteen seconds off the ice due to extra man situation).

Shooting in the game came at a premium as Ferris State demonstrated by only having nine shots in the first period. Colgate outshot the Bulldogs 14-9 in period one with Ferris winning that battle in the second period by a 14-10 count. Ferris State would outshoot Colgate 35-27 in the game.

Ferris State would go on to Saturday’s regional final to play the winner of North Dakota/Wisconsin, the regional’s second game, scheduled for 8pm ET in Cincinnati.

Second Semifinal: North Dakota Punches Ticket In 5-2 Victory

Off a Michael Parks goal at 5:06 of the first period, the University of North Dakota, as Goliath, defeated the Big Ten’s David, or Wisconsin, to move onto the Midwest Regional final versus WCHA neophyte Ferris State on Saturday afternoon.

Rocco Grimaldi would add an even strength goal in the second period to bookend North Dakota’s early advantage. That advantage was solidified in the shots on goal, with North Dakota outshooting the Badgers 35-24 with only eight of those shots coming in the first twenty minutes of play.

Wisconsin recorded twelve different players with one or more shots on the night, and North Dakota had thirteen, with Rocco Grimaldi putting stick to puck on eight different occasions in the 5-2 win. Wisconsin finished 1-3 on man advantages while UND stunningly went 0-5.

The Midwest Regional final is scheduled for Saturday at 6:30pm ET on ESPNU.
