Midwest Premiere plus Backyard Reading Series

One of the exciting things about Steep Theatre Company, tucked next to the Berwyn Red Line stop, is that the playing space can be re-imagined for any play they produce. So you never really know what to expect the theatre to look like when you attend any given production. But what you can expect from Steep – is great theatre.

Steep’s 12th season presents the Midwest Premiere of Obie Award-winner Ethan Lipton’s Luther. The play opened on January 24th and WBEZ’s Kelly Kleiman calls Luther an “Incredibly powerful…the performances are beautiful… a wonderful production…everybody who can fit into their little 45-seat theatre space should see it.”

The play examines America’s uneasy relationship with our veterans through a darkly comic lens. Written by Ethan Lipton, a New York-based musician and writer, Luther premiered last summer in New York as part of the Clubbed Thumb Summerworks 2012 festival.
Luther runs through March 2nd and tickets are available for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday performances at 8pm Steep Theatre at 1115 W. Berwyn. Running Time of Luther is ninety minutes with no intermission.

Steep Theatre constantly reaches out to non-traditional theatre goers with their work. But with all the Jeff recommendations, awards and great reviews, Steep Theatre obviously appeals to all theatre goers. In a continuing effort to introduce their audience to some great plays and exciting playwrights head over to Steep’s Backyard Reading Series on Tuesday, February 5th at 7:30pm. The featured play is The Bereaved by Thomas Bradshaw. Indulge in grilled eats, beverages, and a chance to chat with the playwright and ensemble actors following the reading. Tickets are only $10 at the Steep Theatre or reserve them in advance.

The Bereaved, which was named one of the Best Plays of 2009 by Time Out New York and was a New York Times Critic's Pick was written by Thomas Bradshaw a Professor at Northwestern University. He is also the recipient of a 2009 Guggenheim Fellowship, the 2010 Prince Charitable Trust Prize and is creating a television series for HBO and Harpo Films.

There are two great options at Steep Theatre Company – the critically acclaimed and Jeff Recommended main production – Luther and Steep's Backyard Reading Series with a chance to meet award winning playwright Thomas Bradshaw. Either way you have to get to Steep Theatre where there is apparently more action than the Red Line at rush hour.
