Midtown Parade of Lights gets slow first start

Midtown Sacramento set out to create a new family tradition on the streets of the “handle district” this December 2009. Perhaps it was a jolly good time for those who had a few drinks and got a glimpse of some of the parade that did not complete the full stretch as citizens waited on the curb or from within the warmth of a café. Comments ran from “it was great, I had so much fun” to “we came out here for this? …what a waste of time.” There were those who loudly called out for free samples and abused the ears and sensibilities of the more gentle souls as white clad angels walked the streets with the parade. There were children and adults, people on foot and bike, couples grumbling in discouragement as they toted their tripod and cameras among the many people found on site.

The parade consisted primarily of theme cars of which many had no discernible theme other than a few Christmas lights. However, Yogurtagogo was obvious in its frozen theme as it ran the streets getting a few quick looks at its blatant advertisement disguised in Christmas cheer. Sports cars, a hummer, a truck full of Christmas characters followed by some costumed individuals handing out free samples, ladies with lighted parasols, and a troop of beautiful horses and horse riders cruised the streets in the name of Midtown Parade of Lights. It was fun - of a sort - but not precisely brilliant with a grand population of lights and floats. According to some watchers, the parade had a fuller spectrum of offerings with majorettes and floats but there were quite a few people down on L and neighboring streets waiting for evidence of these aspects of the parade.

Perhaps this was meant to be a float . . . float or not, some people were clearly enjoying their part in the Midtown Parade of Lights. Photo by Susan Raines
Since this is the first run of the Midtown Parade of Lights the faults can be more easily dismissed and the fun of getting out in the crowd in the cold night better enjoyed without huge expectations. Perhaps the simple things aren’t so bad and can be recognized as community endeavors worthy of a thumbs-up even when the thumb is slow to rise.
