I hopped off the OKCMetroTransit # 4 this morning on my way to work, and I was stunned to see reindeer tracks in the snow.
Walking on 13th and Walker near the new construction for The Edge, I could hardly believe my eyes. Reindeer tracks. Reiiiiiiindeeer Tracks. In the snow.
I had to get to the office quickly, to check my photograph of the Reindeer Tracks against other known species it might have been. http://harvestingnature.wordpress.com/2012/11/29/whitetail-deer-hunting-... Nope. Not a whitetail deer.
Not a critter from some other part of the US. See this nice collection of examples, will you? http://www.belleayre.com/winter/tracks.html
Then look at this nifty handout, page 8 says it all. http://www.cairngormreindeer.co.uk/Facts/DownLd/Booklet.pdf They aren't even supposed to BE this far South. See the map? ! And it says they stay separate this time of year. Boys and girls apart. Relationship time outs or something.
At first I thought maybe they were here to see the big guy. You know..... Rumble the Bison the OKC NBA THUNDER MASCOT EXTRODINAIRE. OKC NBA Thunder game last night, SLAMMMMMMMMMMMed the Pacers. Delicious win. Hmmm. ...... Gimme a minute, I am thinking with NO CLUES here people.
Then, I found their shopping list. Dropped in the snow. Close to the REINDEER TRACKS. ..... The Reindeer dropped their shopping list. It has to be theirs, look at what is on the list. Corn. Bells. Ribbons....... And the OKC Saint Anthony's Pop-up Shops. Yep. Chick night out, eh? http://www.okcpopups.com
That and recruiting. http://www.pediastaff.com/blog/pinterest-holiday-pins-of-the-week-reinde... Work ONE day. What is not to love about THAT? Maybe YOU could qualify for being a professional Reindeer? Games, flying, friendly, wanna work for that REALLY BIG GUY, Santa Claus. Kris Kringle. Saint Nicholas. Why not write it up and give it a try? Don't write? Get a bigger helpful person to fill it out for you. But you really should try yourself first, that is how you learn best, ok?
The Big Guy. He goes by soooooooo many names. So many names. Put that in your i-Phone contacts list will you? Clickety-click of hooves and all. No wonder they lost their shopping list. The Girls got NO THUMBS!
I have tried to rouse some in the know...... but no answers yet. @OklahomaWildlife , @okczoo, @OKCMidtowner, @EdShadid, @okcPopUps, ,@LOOKatOKC, @Plaza District, @h_n_8th, @okcthunder. Not really sure WHO would know, you know? @ACOGOK, @EdgeatMidtown, @TimeCar, @METROTransit or Brian Dell http://www.briandell.com. Hmmmmm. Just hmmm. Maybe YOU should be asking?
My experience with other joyful and inexplicable intown mysterious winter holiday happenings is documented. http://www.examiner.com/article/downtown-okc-christmas-where-is-the-love.
This one is true world-wide. http://www.examiner.com/article/reindeer-skyward-exciting
The only thing I can tell you, is the same thing told to me by my elders. Watch. And wait. OK... and eat and drink some. Sing a few songs. Dance. There's lots to do this time of year. http://www.examiner.com/article/fall-family-rituals-and-traditions-hangi...
Watch and Wait. That is the seasonal mantra. Oh. And have your camera or phone ready. ALL the time because OKC is filled with photo ops year round. and OKCMetroTransit is a magnet for these things. A veritable magnet for these things. OR is it Heirloom Shoes..
So, since you and I appeared to have missed the direct OKC Reindeer sightings, I do hope you will consider this: Oklahoma has had yet another bumper crop of native pecans. http://www.examiner.com/article/simple-perfect-whole-food-winter-snack And this Texas treat looks to be something you could probably do while you and your family are waiting http://www.mytexastoday.com/home/node/141 until the big day, when the Reindeer come BACK with Santa Claus.
