Middle Tennessee Christian Announces California Veteran Fred Shambaugh as HC

Fred Shambaugh wanted a good Christian education for his four children.

Enter Middle Tennessee Christian as Shambaugh, a Huntingdon Beach, California native was named as the new head football coach at the small private Murfreesboro school on Friday afternoon.

Shambaugh, 43, a 22 coaching veteran replaces Brian Stewart who led the Cougars to a Class 2A playoff appearance last season and a 6-5 record.

Stewart was 8-24 in his three years at MTCS, he is now the head football coach at Briarcrest Christian School in Memphis.

Shambaugh was spending time with his family and wasn't looking to get back into coaching but MTCS changed his mind.

"I didn't really know if I would ever get back into coaching," Shambaugh said. "The most important thing that my wife and I valued was a great Christian education for our children."

"I wanted to go to a place that I could build a program and my son (Reid) could play for me and after meeting with the MTCS administration and seeing what they believe in, it's a perfect for me and my family."

Shambaugh last head coaching job was at Beckman (CA) school (2007-11) the first two years as the defensive coordinator and from 2009-11 as head coach.

He complied a 21-14-1 record and led the Patriots to the CIF Southern Division Championship game where they lost 31-30 to Garden Grove in 2011.

He also was the head coach at Liberty (CA) high school as well from 2001 to 2004 and led them to a 26-7 record as he has a 47-21-1 overall record.

Shambaugh also worked as an assistant coach at California powerhouse program Centennial (Corona) as well.

He is the fourth head football coach in Tennessee that has been a head coach in the "Golden State" of California joining Scott Blade (Independence), Jeff Cortez (Lenoir City) and Robert McElwee (Unicoi County).

"He is a very knowledgable coach that really wowed the selection committee with his passion and his energy,"

MTCS Principal Todd Miller said. "He is a breath of fresh air that has the program very excited right now."

Currently there are open jobs at Cascade, Mt. Pleasant, Brighton, Dresden, Mt. Juliet Christian, Northeast, Fairley and Jackson Christian as schools currently looking for a head coach.
