Children from all over Middle Tennessee have a fantastic opportunity to audition for one of America's most beloved ballet's The Nutcracker. This extraordinary theatrical masterpiece was originally choreographed in the early 1890's by Marius Petipa. Mr. Petipa is famous for several of the most popular ballet works such as Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake. He worked extensively to with classical composer Peter Tchaikovsky to create the emotional and inspirational musical score that most of us familiarize with The Nutcracker Ballet. It is this timeless music and dance that inspires Nashville children as they audition for this years Nashville Ballet production of The Nutcracker.
The Nutcracker is a timeless Christmas classic ballet. The ballet is inspired by a book written by E.T.A. Hoffman and later revised by Alexander Dumas. The story depicts a young girl named Clara who receives a nutcracker from her godfather. Her little brother becomes jealous and attempts to break her special nutcracker. That evening as Clara falls asleep, she dreams the Nutcracker is engaged in an intense battle with a mouse king. The nutcracker turns into a prince and leads Clara on a magical journey through an enchanted winter wonderland of sweets and snow. On her journey Clara meets many extraordinary characters such as the Sugar Plum Fairy, dancing flowers and snowflakes. In the end Clara awakes from her dream underneath a Christmas tree with her special Nutcracker safe in her arms.
Boys and girls alike will have a chance to gracefully participate in the Nashville Ballet's auditions for The Nutcracker on Sunday's September 13th and 20th at the Martin Center for Dance, located at 3630 Redmon Street. Nashville. Auditions for younger children are open to all boys and girls who have turned 8 years of age on or before December 31st 2009. Auditions for older children ages 12 and up are only open to those students of the Nashville School of Ballet. Girls must wear proper dance attire consisting of pink tights, solid colored leotard, and ballet or toe shoes, boys may wear shorts and t-shirts. Hair should be neat and out of the face. Photographs should be attached to all audition forms.
The specific schedule is as follows:
Boys *7 to 11 Register at 11:00 am - audition from 11:30 am -12:00 pm
Girls *7, 8 & 9 Register at 11:00 am - audition from 12:00 -1:00 pm
Girls 10 & 11 Register at 12:00 pm - audition from 1:00 - 2:00 pm
Boys & Girls 12 & 13 - Must be School of Nashville Ballet students
Register at 1:00 pm - audition from 2:00 - 3:00 pm
Boys & Girls ages 14 and up - Must be School of Nashville Ballet students
Registration at 2:00 - audition from 3:00 - 4:00 pm
Over 200 roles are available for children who audition. This is a professional production and some roles require extensive commitments and training. Some rehearsals may last up to three hours at a time depending on the role. Other roles may only require one hour of rehearsal. Big roles or small roles every ballerina is sure to find this a positive and enjoyable experience. Any child dreaming of becoming a professional ballet dancer should not miss this opportunity to participate in this extrodinary and magical experience.
