Lunch lady accused of having sex with middle school boy, 13, at her home

A middle school cafeteria worker was arrested late Monday night for allegedly having sex with a 13-year-old student at her apartment in Columbia.

Ms. Lawanda Ann Cummings, 42, was charged with second degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor, according to Columbia police.

It was unclear Tuesday how police found out about the alleged incident. It was also unclear if it happened more than once.

But investigators said Ms. Cummings allegedly had sex with the boy at her home, an apartment complex located at 401 Columbiana Drive last year.

At the time of the allegation, Ms. Cummings was employed as a cafeteria worker at Dutch Fork Middle School where the alleged victim was a student, police spokeswoman Ms. Jennifer Timmons said.

Ms. Cummings was transported to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, Ms. Timmons said.
If convicted, she faces up to 20 years in prison, according to state law.

The crime of second degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor is accomplished when the accused uses aggravated coercion to accomplish sexual battery, the law states.
