Middle East Mysteries – The division of Israel

After King Solomons death, the nation of Israel divided with ten tribes going one direction and two, another.  The physical nation of Israel (or Canaan) was divided into a northern kingdom and a southern kingdom.  The northern kingdom of Israel was led by a man named Jeroboam and the southern kingdom, which was Judah, was led by a man named Rehoboam.

Confusion regarding the “Jews” and the “Israelites” has always existed with many thinking they are one in the same.  This is clearly not the case and one easily see’s the division of the 12 tribes of Israel by studying the books of Kings and Chronicles.

In 722 BC the northern kingdom of Israel was invaded by the Assyrians and those ten tribes of Israel (that survived the battles) were permanently uprooted and moved out of Canaan (northern Israel) and into the lands of ancient Assyria into bondage and slavery.  Judah (the southern kingdom of Israel) lasted a little longer but in 586 BC the Babylonians overcame Judah and carried them off into bondage.  It is speculated that Judah fared better because they kept God’s commandments, practices and religion more properly than the northern kingdom had.

The bible records all these tribes of Israel fell and was carried into captivity because of Israel’s nature to continue to disobey God and fall into sin where God would punish them by allowing them to be taken into captivity.  Judah (the southern kingdom of Israel) fared better than the northern kingdom this last time as Judah only spent 70 years in Babylon before being allowed to return to Jerusalem.

The ten tribes carried off into Assyria never returned to the land of Canaan and Israel. These ten tribes continued to sin against God and not practice the commands and teachings they had accumulated through Moses and other prophets.  As generations passed, these ten tribes of Israel began to lose their entire heritage as their faith and practices were lost piece by piece with each passing generation.

Not only did these ten tribes of Israel never return to Canaan as well as loose the customs of their fathers, faith, heritage, practices and religion; when parts and pieces of them did gain their freedom once again they began migrating northwestward around the Mediterranean and north through what is today Turkey, Greece and on into Europe.  These peoples truly became the lost ten tribes of Israel.
