Mid-morning snack can be trouble for dieters

Holding on for dear life to your New Year's Resolutions to lose weight?  Still hoping to attain or maintain a healthy weight?

Here's a surprising tip: Cut out the mid-morning snack.

Researcher Anne McTiernan of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle examined data from 123 overweight to obese dieting women, ages 50 to 70.  She found that
women who snacked mid-morning lost about 7 percent of their weight, but who did not snack at all lost about 11 percent.

Dr. McTiernan suggests drinking something instead of eating.  One caveat: The best beverages for dieteres are those that don’t have sugar in them – things like water, or tea, or coffee.  Be careful not to load your coffee with syrups, toppings, and sugar.

This study was published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietics and supported by the National Institutes of Health.
