Microsoft corporate vice president Phil Harrison said all the hoopla and conjecture about the Xbox One vs. PlayStation 4 in terms of tech specs isn’t really what’s important, according to a report today from VG 24/7.
Harrison said what really matters is what games the Xbox One or the PS4 have, and the gaming experience gamers feel with each next-gen console.
In an interview with Edge, Harrison championed, obviously, the Xbox One game catalogue, saying gamers will chose the Microsoft next-gen console over the PS4 because of its titles rather than its tech.
“… Every platform I’ve ever been involved in somebody has said, ‘Oh, this has got more gigaflops or more teraflops than the other one,’ and at the end of the day it never really matters,” Harrison said.
Harrison also added that developers, including Microsoft’s internal studios, are creating next-gen console titles on operating systems that aren’t finished, and the quality of an Xbox One or PS4 could change before launch.
For example, Harrison said the Xbox One could upgrade its CPU and GPU before its November release.
“So I think it’s impossible to draw any conclusions from that based on pre-launch unfinished hardware and unfinished operating systems,” Harrison said. “My main response is going to be always that it’s about having the best game experiences and the widest possible set of content that people want to play.”
The Xbox One hits shelves in the U.S. and 12 other markets on Nov. 22, going worldwide by 2014. The PS4 drops in North America on Nov. 15, Europe on Nov. 29 and Japan in February.
