According to a report today from VG 24/7, Microsoft Studios corporate vice president Phil Spencer has given up the fight against the Xbox One nickname Xbone.
Spencer said he realized that the Xbone nickname, which was pasted all over Twitter after the Xbox One announcement in May, will likely stick and he’s going to “roll with it.”
In an interview with GameSpot, Spencer said the nickname Xbone bothered him at first, not because it was disrespectful but because he didn’t think of it first.
“I’d been looking at the name for Xbox One for months, and I wasn’t clever enough to merge them and come up with Xbone,” Spencer said.
Spencer said he thinks the name will stick no matter how much Microsoft screams that they don’t like it, and even called it a clever use of the Xbox One name.
“Probably not the most flattering name, but I think it’s going to be there,” Spencer said.
Programming director for Xbox Live Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb probably would disagree.
Last month Hryb called the moniker distasteful and disrespectful.
“I don't like it. It disrespects the teams that have put in thousands of hours (already) into the development of the product. Sure, it's cheeky, but I don't care for it myself,” Hryb said.
Even so, Microsoft quickly snatched up the domain rights to Xbone.com. You can read that full Examiner report here.
