Those who were disappointed by the fact that on Monday Microsoft made no mention of Surface 2 tablets with cellular connectivity were heartened by the Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA) session after the press conference. As ZDNet noted, it's coming, in early 2014.
Surface head Panos Panay said an LTE-sporting Surface 2 is coming in early 2014. His exact answer about LTE availability on Surface. Panay's response:
We didn't talk about it today, but Surface 2 will be launching an awesome LTE SKU early next year! Nice catch on your part, no one else has asked this question...... what better way to tell people than through Reddit!!
Indeed, Panay seemed pretty excited, as the exclamation points indicate. However, he not only left out a detail, he didn't respond to follow up questions.
It's unclear from Panay's statement if he was talking about the Surface 2 (the Windows RT version), the Surface Pro 2, or both. The Surface Pro 2 is, admittedly, already pricey sans LTE connectivity. Adding LTE to the Pro 2, which already has a price double that of some full-sized laptops, could be an issue.
That "early next year" timeframe might be a good time to buy a Surface 2. Not only will the LTE-equipped device appear, so will Microsoft's Power Cover, which adds an embedded battery to a Type Cover and gives the Surface Pro 2 enough battery life for a full day's work.
The Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 were unveiled at a New York City event on Monday morning, at 10 a.m. EDT. Both devices sport 10.6-inch displays, with the Pro 2 getting a new Haswell processor to improve battery life. The Surface 2, which has lost its RT moniker, will receive an NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor.
Both devices go on sale on Tuesday, Sept. 24, with the Surface 2 starting at $449, and the Surface Pro 2 at $899.
