Mickey the pit bull: Judge saves pit bull who mauled 4-year-old from euthanasia

Mickey the pit bull had mauled a four-year-old boy last month and even though the judge would have had grounds to order the dog’s euthanasia, Mickey the pit bull was saved. When a Phoenix judge on Tuesday spared the animal’s life in her ruling, one of the animal advocates in the courtroom cried, reported CBS News on March 25.

On Feb. 20, four-year-old Kevin Vicente was attacked by the dog and left with a broken eye socket and jaw. The little boy is facing months, maybe even years, of reconstructive surgery. One of the adults present at the scene of the attack filed the court case against the animal stating that the dog has a history of acting out without provocation and that he had even killed one of her own dogs.

So why was Mickey the pit bull spared by Municipal Court Judge Deborah Griffin?

During the court case hearing it came to light that the dog had been chained up by his owner, trained to be aggressive, and that the baby sitter who was supposed to be watching four-year-old Kevin was negligent in letting the boy play near the dog.

Too many dogs, not just pit bulls, have been unjustly euthanized because they bit a child in the face. Most dogs sleep with their eyes open, and when an unknowing child thinks that the animal is awake and approaches the dog to touch him, hug him, or give him a kiss, even the gentlest dog might react instinctively and bite in order to protect himself. Children, parents, and babysitters need to be aware of this.

Mickey the pit bull has been taken away from the irresponsible owner. He will be neutered, defanged, microchipped, and has been ordered to remain in a facility for the rest of his life. An animal rights group has become his trustee and has 30 days to find a rehabilitation center or a shelter for him. "There would be absolutely no possibility of the animal ever doing this to someone again," said the judge. But what about the next dog and the next child?
