Phil “The Thrill” can be fun to watch. Imagine if baseball were as interesting as following Mickelson on a Sunday back nine of a major championship. Every batter would swing for the parking lot. The snow cones in the infield and outfield would qualify as refreshment in the dog days of summer.
The deal, valued at $800 million, is to be approved at the owners’ meeting next month.
It’s a natural decision for Mickelson who grew up in San Diego. He has been a Padres fan since before he could break 80.
Mickelson, like many other Padre aficionados says he would like to see, “an emotional tie with players and community.”
A few trips to the playoffs could help that cause. A marquee player and major winner like him could earn recognition for a team needs it much more than it needs another hole in the infield.
