Mickelson set to pass Woods in world golf rankings

Stop me if you've heard this one before, but, as he prepares for next week’s garden party in Augusta, Tiger Woods is about to watch Phil Mickelson pass him in the world golf rankings for the first time since the 1997 Masters.

No, really. Sure, Phil The Thrill has had numerous chances to overtake Woods over the last year-plus. Needing only a top-36 finish at this week's Shell Houston Open to overtake the current No. 5, and tied for 21st after Friday's play, Mickelson was likely to succeed this time.

No matter how Mickelson finishes, England’s Paul Casey will leapfrog Woods in the standings when the new roll call comes out Sunday night. Shell Open contestants Steve Stricker and Matt Kuchar could also overtake Woods in the official world golf rankings, which means Woods may tee it up next Thursday as the world’s ninth-ranked golfer.
