The 2013-14 college academic year has begun, and with it, many of the University of Michigan's women's sports teams have kicked off their seasons.
Cross country got started with a successful outing at the Michigan Open in Dexter, not far from the Ann Arbor campus. Wolverines placed in the top three spots, with Shannon Osika, Brook Handler, and Taylor Pogue taking the honors.
The field hockey team is off to a tough start, winning only one of their first four games. They beat Maine and lost to three ranked teams: number 1 North Carolina, number 14 Massachusetts, and number 18 Wake Forest. Rachael Mack leads the team in goals with four and Michelle Roberts has two. Leslie Smith has five assists to top the team in that category. Goaltender Haley Jones has a 3.50 goals against average so far on the season.
Women's soccer shut out Wisconsin-Milwaukee to open the season on a strong note, then routed Oakland University 6-1. They got by their Washtenaw County neighbors, the Eastern Michigan Eagles, 2-1 in overtime to remain unbeaten. Next, Michigan defeated two ranked teams, #21 San Diego State and #22 Pepperdine. They are now a perfect 5-0 on the season and are ranked #11 in the nation. Nkem Ezurike leads the team in goals with four and assists with five. Other leading scorers include Madisson Lewis, Christina Ordonez, and Nicky Waldeck. Taylor Bucklin has been very good minding the net, with a goals against average of just 0.41.
Volleyball is also off to a 5-0 start. They opened the season in Cincinnati, earning three straight-set match wins against Clemson, Xavier, and Northern Kentucky. The weekend of September 6-7 found the Wolverines hosting Oregon State and Oregon as part of the Big Ten/Pac Twelve Challenge. Michigan was certainly up to the challenge, defeating Oregon State three sets to one and #12 Oregon in three sets. Michigan is #7 in the current national volleyball poll. Among the top performers so far are Lexi Irwin, Molly Toon, Abby Cole, and Jennifer Cross.
