The Michigan Theater is again offering their Young Filmmakers Camp this summer, and early bird pricing is in effect until May 24th.
“[The Michigan Theater Young Filmmakers Camp] gave a good basic understanding of how films are made (technically), provided a great creative and collaborative experience, some beginning experience using a film camera, and a lot of fun. Bonus was getting a behind-the-scenes tour of the theater and getting to try the organ – both were big hits!”

Here's a sampling of some of the courses being offered this year:
- Intro to Filmmaking - suggested for grades 5-8. July 8-12, 9am-3pm. Students will learn the filmmaking basics by producing, directing, and editing short films within a team.
- Intermediate Filmmaking (middle school). July 22-26, 9am-3pm. The next step up from Intro to Filmmaking; campers need to have attended Intro to Filmmaking in a previous year to qualify for this class. (high school session: July 29-August 2, with the same requirement)
The "grand finale screening" of all participants' work will be on Sunday, September 8 at 1pm, at the theater, which is free and open to the public. Camp classes are taught by EMU Film Studies Professor Brooke Dagnan and Michigan Theater Film Programmer Brian Hunter, as well as additional motion picture professionals and EMU instructors.
Fees are $419 for Michigan Theater Members (early bird price; $469 after 5/24) or $469 for the public ($519 after 5/24). There are also three full-tuition scholarships available; see the Michigan Theater's website for details.
