Michigan State student faces jail time for fires after Spartans' loss to Duke (Video)

According to an article in Thursday's USA Today, a Michigan State student has been charged with two misdemeanors for his role in furniture fires set in the streets of East Lansing after last Friday's disappointing loss for the Spartans at the hands of the Duke Blue Devils.

As previously reported on Examiner.com, city officials were not surprised that a number of small fires and other civil disturbances broke out following MSU's early exit in the NCAA men's basketball tournament, given the school's checkered past when it comes to rioting after sporting events.

Capt. Jeff Murphy, of the East Lansing Police Department, told the Lansing State Journal that they have identified four people they believe to have been involved in the fires and disturbances.

Among those four is a 22-year-old Michigan State student who now faces up to 90 days in jail for his offenses. Authorities have not released the student's name as of this publication.

Though the fires and other large parties in East Lansing were well under control or dissipated by 2 a.m. on Saturday morning, city officials look to be making an example of these four individuals in the hopes of deterring these type of activities in the future.

Luckily, no injuries were reported on either on Friday night or Saturday morning related to the incident.
