Perhaps all wasn't lost in Michigan State's 41-42 loss to Illinois on Tuesday considering what might have happened.
Upon first report of the game's outcome, it was unclear whether the Spartans' star senior, Draymond Green, would be returning to the team anytime soon after he needed assistance getting off the court with a few minutes left on the clock. Michigan State Spartans head coach Tom Izzo didn't know exactly what had happened during the match up, but he knew it wasn't anything good.
"I have no idea," Izzo said about Green's injury after the game. "He didn't walk off, that's for sure. I'm not sure exactly what it is. It's a shame because early in the game he just did not play well."
Green limped on the sidelines for the remainder of the game as his teammates failed to produce anything even remotely similar to offensive production. After the game, Green tried to shoulder the blame for his team's performance, but in the end, it was not a singular effort.
"Tough loss keyed by me letting my team down. ... We will bounce back and we will be fine," Green told reporters.
An MRI performed early Wednesday revealed that Green suffered a sprained left knee during the game, though it is unclear exactly when the injury occurred. Green is listed as 'day to day' according to school reps.
The senior forward is averaging 14.9 points, 10.3 rebounds, 1.5 steals, 1.1 blocks per game and leads the Spartans in each of those categories. Michigan State is not scheduled to play again until Sunday when they will face in-state rival Michigan at home in East Lansing.
