Another in the long list of non-automotive Michigan businesses is the limestone industry. In fact the world's largest limestone quarry is located in Rogers City, Michigan.
The quarry has been operated by Michigan Limestone and Chemical Company since 1912.
Michigan Limestone & Chemical Co. had been formed two tears earlier by New York investment banker William F. White and a group of investors. They purchased a large block of land along the Lake Huron shore just south of the small lumbering community of what is now Rogers City.
Limestone is a sedimentary rock composed largely of the minerals calcite and aragonite. The limestone produced at Michigan Limestone is high quality and almost pure white, making it very desirable.
Since the time the Egyptians and Aztecs built their pyramids, limestone has been popular in construction. It is still very common in twenty-first century architecture, especially in Europe and North America.
