Michigan's prescription drug discount card offers 20% savings

Many people lack health insurance and prescription drug coverage and are deciding not to take prescribed medications due to high cost. This can be detrimental to health, especially for those with chronic conditions. If you have prescriptions to be filled, and can not afford to pay for them, you may qualify for Michigan’s new prescription drug assistance program, even if you are employed.

The My Prescription (MiRx) Card is a new prescription drug discount program for Michigan residents who do not have any prescription drug coverage. Applying and enrolling in the program are free. There is no age limit to participate in the program and all eligible members of a family or household must be included on an enrollment form. Each eligible applicant will receive their own MiRx card once approved, usually in 2 weeks.

To be eligible, applicants must:
       • Be a resident of the state of Michigan
       • Have no other prescription drug coverage
       • Have an income level at or below the state’s median  income level:
            • $31,200 for 1 person
            • $42,000 for a family of 2
            • $63,600 for a family of 4

The MiRx card is easy to use. MiRx card holders present their prescription and MiRx card to their local participating pharmacy. The pharmacist will fill the prescription and charge the MiRx discounted price, good on any medicine prescribed by a doctor and stocked by the pharmacist. Expect to save about 20 percent off the retail price of common prescription drugs. Savings will typically be between 5 and 25 percent, depending on the types of medicine, and if they are generic or brand-name drugs.

Over-the-counter drugs are not covered, even if they are prescribed by a doctor.

To apply for MiRx card, complete the application and mail it to MiRx Enrollment, P.O. Box 30412, Lansing, MI 48909. Click here for more information or call 1-866-755-6479.

Is there a way to compare this card's drug prices with the prices that I'm getting with the prescription discount card that I bought at www.rxdrugcard.com? I pay $4.50 a month for that card.

I wouldn't pay anything for these cards. I use on that gives me great discounts on my prescriptions and also helps the humane society at www.BoyneRx.com. One card can be shared by anyone else and it even covers pets. I've saved more than half on some of my drugs. You should give it a try Camilla and put the $4.50 back in your pocket (or gas tank) every month.
