On February 2nd at 8:15am, The Howell nature center starts off it's Ground Hog day with the prediction of springs weather by none other than Michigan's official Ground hog Woody! Woody once again takes center stage as she decides if we have an early spring or 6 more weeks of winter. Afterwards attendees can enjoy a pancake breakfast at the Howell nature center.
The tradition of celebrating ground hog's day dates back to the 1800's with early German immigrants celebrating this day as weather lore. In those times badgers or bears were used to predict the weather. The biggest American Ground hog day celebration is held in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania with the famous Punxsutawney Phil making the prediction. Legends says that if it is cloudy the ground hog with predict and early spring but it the Ground hog see it's shadow it with go back in to its den for Six more weeks of winter.
What will Woody and Phil predict this year? Experts say that the Ground hogs are 75 to 90% accurate every time depending on the area of the country you live in.
