Michigan`s Abbott falls and Plushenko withdraws from Sochi Olympics

U.S. figure skater Jeremy Abbott deserves a medal for fortitude after falling and then getting up and finishing his short program.

A lesser man would have skated off the ice after falling for the second time in competition at the Winter Olympics. Ironically, both spills occurred in the men's short program - last week in the team event and today in individual competition.

Abbott, who trains at the Detroit Skating Club in Bloomfield Hills, fell while attempting a quadruple toe loop. His performance put him in 10th place with no chance of an individual medal. He did receive a bronze model for his role in the Team Trophy event.

Also, Russia`s Evgeni Plushenko withdrew from the men's event after aggravating his bad back in practice Wednesday. The 2006 Olympic champion was in obvious pain while warming up today and later explained he couldn't feel his right leg while practicing on the ice.
