The Michigan Philharmonic Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Nan Washburn, will be performing "Miniature Masterpieces" concert at the Detroit Institute of Arts on Friday, January 17, 2014. The concert is be part of the DIA's Friday Night LIVE! Series and starts at 7:00 pm in the Rivera Court.
Performed in two segments, the concert features music from Dvorak and Mozart as well as Michigan Philharmonic Concertmaster, Joseph Deller performing with the ensemble on Michael Daugherty's extraordinary piece, "Ladder to the Moon". Daugherty, one of the most commissioned, performed and recorded composers on the American scene today, is one the faculty of University of Music School of Music. His work, "Ladder to the Moon" was writing in 2006 and is based on Georgia O'Keeffe's painting of the New York skyline.
The second part of the concert features Mozart's, grand work for winds,Serenade No. 10 - the "Gran Partita". This rarely performed masterpiece was prominently featured in the movie, "Amadeus" and typifies the genius of Mozart through the unique sounds of oboes, clarinets, bassoons and horns.
The concert is free with Museum admission and everyone is encouraged to come early and enjoy the collections and stay for the concert.
