On Monday, August 23, 2010 I spoke briefly via telephone to USA Coast Guard - Master Chief - Frank T. Jennings - from the Ninth District in Cleveland, Ohio about the roll out of the Paddle Smart ID sticker program.
The Labor Day holiday weekend is the kick off for the Paddle Smart ID around town named "Paddles Up Great Lakes" . Check this website for the official press release as Labor Day draws near.
Visit the local Coast Guards stations to get the water-proof, reflective,
self-adhesive stickers for owner identification and contact info on your kayak

As time goes on you'll see the stickers available at lakes sites like Cass Lake, Orchard Lake and others for the recreational paddling crowd who avoids the Detroit River, Lake St. Clair, etc.
The Coat Guard Ninth District is responsible for all Coast Guard operations throughout the five Great Lakes, the Saint Lawrence Seaway and parts of the surrounding states including 6,700 miles of shoreline and 1,500 miles of the international border with Canada.

PaddleSmart ID started on the East Coast is spreading nationwide as the USCG rolls it out.
And it is free. Lots better that the paid sticker a few Michigan legislaters are advocating!
