Michigan Olympians Davis and White win ice dancing gold medals

It was expected, but the Michigan pair of Meryl Davis and Charlie White still needed a masterful performance to win gold medals in Ice Dancing.

Not surprisingly, the top three pairs in the short program retained their positions in the longer free dance skating portion of the event. Davis and White led the way with 116.63 points in the finals and finished with a total of 195.52 points. The Canadian pair of Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir won silver medals with 190.99 points and the Russian pair of Elena Ilinykh and Nikita Katsalapov earned bronze medals with 183.48 points.

Davis and White switched positions with Virtue and Moir, because in the 2010 Winter Olympics it was the Canadian pair who won the gold medals and the American pair winning silver medals in Ice Dancing. All four of the skaters practice in Canton, Michigan under the careful tutelage of coach Marina Zueva.

Team USA and the state of Michigan also placed two other pairs in the top 10 of the Ice Dancing event. Madison Chock and Evan Bates were 8th with 164.64 points and brother-sister duo Maia and Alex Shibutani were 9th with 155.17 points.
