The Michigan Lottery reports that not only was the winning $36 million dollar Mega Millions jackpot ticket purchased in Michigan, a second Mega Millions player from Michigan won $250,000. The $36 million dollar winning ticket was bought at the One Stop Mart at 2536 Sprinkle Road in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Four additional players each winning $250,000 were from Arizona, California, Georgia, and Illinois. They matched all five white balls without the Mega Ball. There were also thirty six $10,000 prizes awarded around the country.
Tax Information for Lottery Winners: What are the Taxes on $36,000,000?
The lucky Michigan winner will have to pay 4.35% state tax, and 25% federal tax on their winnings, or a total of $10.6 million dollars right off the top of his winnings. In comparison, a winner from Providence, Rhode Island has high taxes to contend with if they were lucky enough to win last night's Mega Millions jackpot. Rhode Island imposes a 7 percent state tax on lottery winnings. Add that to the already high 25 percent federal taxes, and Joey Rhode Islander would have to cough up a total of $11.5 million dollars in tax money. If a winner in Rhode Island took the cash option of $23.5 Million, the R.I. winner would pay an estimated $7.7 million dollars in state and federal taxes.

According to Mega Millions.com, "If you are a Mega Millions jackpot winner, you will have the choice of a Cash Option or an Annual Payout. Annuity option: Provides annual payments over a 26-year period. For every $1,000,000 in the jackpot, you will receive approximately $39,500 per year before taxes. Cash option: A one-time, lump-sum payment that is equal to all the cash in the Mega Millions jackpot prize pool."
